If you are living in those parts of world where summer has set in full throttle then you have all my sympathies with you. I have always lived in India and here summers are like you have no idea how hot it gets, okay.
Temperatures are currently soaring from 40 to 45 degree Celsius and all we can feel is sweat and thirst. But you know what, this is the perfect time to go on a summer retreat. Head on to somewhere cool. It needn’t be Switzerland. If you are worried about travel expenses and do not want to plan an international trip to New Zealand or Iceland then you can choose one back home too. Even people from other countries have been flocking India for the same reason.
India is blessed with some cool regions where you can find snow all year round. Here is the list of 8 snow clad destinations of India to try this summer.
Gulmarg is located 55 kms away from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir and it is accessible by private cars. You can enjoy skiing, world’s highest gondola ride or just chill around and experience the cold weather in zero degree. The route from Srinagar to Gulmarg itself is stunning.
Another exotic destination to check out in Kashmir is Pahalgam. It is situated almost 95 kms away from Srinagar which is approximately 2 hours drive. I have been there and believe me its completely covered in snow if you go in March or mid April. There are innumerable beautiful valleys like Aru valley, Chandanwari, Betaab valley and so on to visit in Pahalgam. More about it is mentioned in my another blog. 5-valleys-of-kashmir-that-stunned-me/
3. Rohtang Pass, Manali
I have been to Rohtang when I was very little, so I do not have pictures of it. So here is a snap taken from internet. Imagine the beauty plus all the fun you can have playing snowball games here. Rohtang pass is the gateway to Leh valley and Spiti (another amazing retreat) and it is located on a height of 3980 meters and a distance of 51 kms from Manali.
4. Bhrigu lake, Manali
This lake is named after the great sage Bhrigu rishi who is believed to have meditated here for years together. The trek is not simple. I did it when I was merely 13 years old. You also get to see snow bears and white tigers on the way; but from a distance because it is not a century, these animals roam freely over there. You can only go for this trek under guidance of a local sherpa.
5. North Sikkim
Okay, this is a place I have never been to. And I will be visiting Sikkim for the first time in this coming month. I will blog about it exclusively once I come back with some great pictures. But from what I have read so far, it is a worth visit place on account of its beautiful Himalayan ranges, world’s third largest peak Kangchenjunga and breathtaking sights.
Ladakh is one of the favorite destinations for travelers right now. This cold desert is situated 434 kms from Srinagar and 474 kms from Manali. If you want to experience real cold weather, the one that can get to your bones then head to Ladakh. It boasts of picturesque valleys, lakes and monasteries.
7 . Nainital
If there is one place where you can stay put for several days and still not get enough of its beauty, it is Nainital located in Uttarakhand. Its surreal lakes, lush green surrounding and the cool weather make Nainital a perfect place to spend your summer holidays.
8. Kufri, Shimla
Again, this is a lovely place where I had been while I was just 13. But I have this vivid memory of skiing on the icy floor. You can also find ice skating rings in Kufri. It is fun place to enjoy snow near Shimla. What can be better than this to enjoy summer vacation?
